AVI LOOKED ON WITH slight trepidation as the mortar crews began to set up their equipment behind the freestanding wall of what was once an apartment complex. Although his command and sniper teams all wore the particle accelerator belts that would supposedly protect them from the alien's ECM, the Russian units assigned to provide short ranged artillery support had none; there just wasn't enough time to build more of the devices to equip everyone.

We don't even know if these things are having an effect, he thought. Then again, we haven't encountered anything dangerous yet.

Lieutenant Jules Rochant's voice came over his earpiece; the French GIGN commando was in charge of the sniper teams. "Rifles Two to Seven now in position. Where do you want my other four?"

Avi brought out his tablet computer from the shoulder pack and ran his gloved finger along the glowing virtual map of the area. "Can you get them to move past the highway and set them up over at that sauna bath building to cover our northern approach?"

"Negative. We will not be able to support them if they get attacked. We're already spread out as it is and our own flanks are vulnerable."

"Alright, maintain your position. Have your team sound off if you spot anything."

"Acknowledged. Out."

Another man, carrying what looked like a big bulky backpack, emerged from a shadowy alcove and approached him. Avi instantly recognized him as Dieter Haas, a GSG 9 operative. The tall blond German was built like a mountain, and carried a modified XL18 flamethrower, in addition to his Heckler & Koch MP5K short-barreled sub-machine gun. Both men used silent nods to hail each other.

"Herr Captain, I am feeling useless over here," Haas said. "Request permission to get closer to the primary assault teams?"

Avi bit his lip. His operatives were getting too spread out and they would have to fend for themselves if they were attacked. We don't have enough men to cover the entire perimeter. "Alright, check on Bingham's team and see if you can back them up. They are all by themselves at the eastern end of the block."

"Jawohl. I mean, yes, sir."
